Long Forgotten, Now Remembered

As I wander through charts and lists of records from the years 1969-75 – my sweet spot, as my pal Schultz would call it – it’s not often that I come across the title of a record that I liked but have utterly forgotten about. There are plenty of records that I never knew, of course, and one of the better things about writing a blog like this one is that it’s introduced me to a lot of music that I missed the first time around.

But to come across a title of a record I liked back then and realize I’d not thought about it in years, well, that’s pretty rare, especially when one takes into consideration the fact that I’ve been blogging for almost eight years about the music I like, and the vast majority of posts here have been about the music from that stretch of years. Not once, however, in these nearly eight years of blogging have I even mentioned the record that caught my attention this morning.

Still, I remembered it as soon as I saw the title: As 1974 met 1975, “Sad Sweet Dreamer” by Sweet Sensation was bubbling under the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 102. It’s a record that I no doubt heard both on the radio and coming from the jukebox in the student union forty years ago. There are no specific memories attached to the tune, no loves lost or won, no quiet conversations over scotch and water, but it’s been there in the back of my mind just waiting for a reminder.

“Sad Sweet Dreamer” entered the Hot 100 in early January 1975 and stayed there for sixteen weeks, peaking at No. 14. It was the only hit for the Sweet Sensation, an eight-person group from Manchester, England. And it’s worth another listen as I head offstage to help the Texas Gal with some end-of-year chores. I’ll stop in briefly on Thursday as the new year begins.

gorgeous song. 1975 (my sophomore year in HS) had so many songs that have stuck with me, I’m trying to figure out why that year was so special and I’m drawing a blank.

Happy New Year and keep up the posts!!
