Saturday Single No. 376

It was a time of bewilderment, of feelings never before experienced and of astounding joy and equally astounding sorrow. Some of it I handled well and some I handled as well as I could at the time, which turned out to be not well at all.

It was a time of lessons, some of which I learned then and some of which I’ve taken years to master. Combine that with my being both blessed and cursed with a good memory, and nearly every moment – from the sweet and good portions at the start to the less sweet and less good parts at the end – remains as clear as anything in this world can be.

Some dates stick hard in my mind, and today’s date – January 25 – is one of those. Forty years ago, January 25 was a very sad and confusing day.

Beyond that, all I need to say in this (admittedly self-indulgent) post is that if there’s one song that I wish I’d understood earlier than I did, it’s Bread’s 1970 single “It Don’t Matter To Me.” And it’s today’s Saturday Single.

Don’t feel so self-indulgent; I’m right with you. I was learning some of the same hard lessons and working through strong new emotions to the same record. Bread was part of the soundtrack of my teenage years.

Even though I don’t know your specific details, I know exactly what you mean.
