One Chart Dig: May 1968

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Things are a bit busy this early part of the week, and it’s doubtful that I’ll have time for a full post until Wednesday. But I thought I’d throw out a preview of that Wednesday post, when I plan to look at the Billboard Hot 100 from May 11, 1968.

Most folks remember Los Bravos for the 1966 hit “Black is Black,” which went to No. 4. But the group – which was formed in Spain with German-born Mike Kogel as lead singer – had two other tunes place in the Hot 100. “Going Nowhere” spent two weeks in the chart in late 1966, peaking at No. 91. And in the spring of 1968, Los Bravos released “Bring A Little Lovin’,” which went to No. 51.

I don’t know that I’d ever heard the tune until today. But with its combination of garage sounds, psychedelic flourishes and Motown/Stax horns all put together in a little more than two minutes, it should have done much, much better.
