One Dig: August 18, 1979

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

This week’s edition of the Ultimate Jukebox will be delayed until at least tomorrow. But here’s an interesting artifact from the summer of 1979: “Hot Summer Nights” by Night, a group that included, among others, guitarist Robbie McIntosh and pianist Nicky Hopkins. Both of them are, of course, better known for work with others: McIntosh with the Pretenders and in Paul McCartney’s backing band and Hopkins with the Rolling Stones. “Hot Summer Nights” was sitting at No. 24 in the Billboard Hot 100 thirty-one years ago today, on its way to No. 18. It’s not a record I recall hearing from the time, but then, I was listening less and less to Top 40 radio as the Seventies waned, so that’s not surprising. Listening to it this morning, it sounds very much of its time, and that’s all right.
