‘Oh, Lord, Won’t You Buy Me . . .’

I’m planning on digging into the chart from this week in 1972, but that’s not going to happen this morning, at least not entirely. I have some obligations that are going to keep me tied up today, so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow for most of my digging.

But here’s an appetizer: The Goose Creek Symphony with its cover of Janis Joplin’s “Merdeces Benz.” Thirty-nine years ago this week, it was in its fourth week in the Billboard Hot 100 and was sitting at No. 80. It would peak at No. 64. The Symphony put out four records with a mixture of country, folk and rock during the 1970s and then picked up again during the 1990s. The group’s most recent album of new material was 2008’s Goin’ Home.

See you tomorrow!
