Saturday Single No. 206

Batter up!

It’s time once more for the whiteray domicile to host the annual Strat-O-Matic baseball tournament. In just a few hours, Rick, Rob and Dan will arrive for this year’s classic – the fifth annual – and we’ll all spend the day catching up, telling tales, enjoying good food and drink and, yeah, playing some Strat-O-Matic baseball along the way.

For those who are interested, here are this year’s teams:

Rob is bringing back the defending champions, the 1922 New York Giants and is adding the offensively challenged but pitching-rich and very fast 1906 Chicago Cubs.

Rick has selected the power-laden 1961 New York Yankees and the pitching-heavy 1987 Detroit Tigers.

Dan’s entries are the offensive-minded Philadelphia Phillies of 2009 and the 1998 Atlanta Braves, who had both offense and pitching to spare.

My entries are the 2006 Minnesota Twins, anchored by pitching, and the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates, a power-heavy team that happens to feature the late Roberto Clemente in his last season.

Rob, of course, has won all four of the previous events, and the other three of us will be scrambling once again to keep him from doing so this year.

And with that, I have to go groom the pitcher’s mound, lay out the batter’s box and the foul lines and make sure there’s plenty of beer and other refreshments in the refrigerator. So I’ll leave you with an ABBA tune from 1980 whose title fits the day, even though the Swedish quartet was singing about an entirely different sport:

Hey, is there a baseball table game nerd joke in there? You are playing Strat-O-Matic and you cue up an ABBA song. I assure you that when we played APBA, we played many songs with Stratocaster guitars (but no Plasmatics). So, did that ’71 Pirates team win it all?
